Opatija is often called the cradle of tourism in Croatia. For more than 180 years, this elegant seaside town has been attracting visitors with its unique atmosphere, which is why many describe it as the true lady of the Adriatic.

Located in the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea, in the heart of the Kvarner region, Opatija is a perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding area. Near Opatija you will find charming fishing villages such as Volosko, Ičići, Ika and Lovran, all connected by the scenic Lungomare coastal promenade.

Throughout history, Opatija was a favourite destination of European nobility. Among its visitors were Emperor Franz Joseph I and Crown Prince Rudolf. At one time, the town was even envisioned as the new Nice of the Adriatic, yet it has preserved its intimate size and charming character.

Today visitors come to Opatija to enjoy the fresh sea air, elegant surroundings, stylish cafés, traditional restaurants, cocktail bars and beautiful beaches. The region is especially famous for its seafood, particularly Kvarner scampi, as well as excellent local wines such as Žlahtina, Malvasia and Teran.

It is therefore no surprise that Kvarner was named the Best Gourmet Region in Europe in 2026.
